The enormous size of the Australian continent gives it a great diversity from the cooler states to the south up to the tropical Northern territory containing one of the most unique ecosystems down under, Kakadu National Park. This World Heritage Site has astounding sights to take in and amazing inhabitants to discover!

The Kakadu National Park traces its history back some 40,000 years . Measuring about 19,800 square metres, the park is made up of floodplains, estuaries, and major river systems.

Kakadu is located 170 kilometres east of Darwin, and is divided into seven sections, all of which provide a unique insight into this wild part of Australia!

The East Alligator area features , a sacred Aboriginal ground which is said to be 20,000 years old. To get there,turn north off the Arnhem Highway 1km west of the Kakadu Highway intersection and travel a further 39km. A 1km circular track takes you past several fascinating Aboriginal rock art sites. An additional 250m moderately steep climb takes you to the top of a rocky lookout that provides superb views over the Nardab floodplain. You will see plenty of wildlife including geese, , spoonbills, pythons and some of the world’s largest crocodiles..

South Alligator . Mamulala is beautiful all year but at its most dramatic in the late dry season (Sept - Oct) when thousands of magpie geese congregate to feed a viewing platform for visitors Click here for great airfares to NT helps make this spectacle easier to appreciate . The South Alligator River,is the main river flowing through the centre of Kakadu National Park. The rest of the wetlands can also be explored through well maintained hiking trails.

Jabiru area is where you can pick up most of the tours for Kakadu with the spectacular Arnhemland Escarpment as a backdrop, Jabiru is situated on a 13 square kilometre lease within Kakadu National Park. This makes it the only Australian town set inside a National Park.

Nourlangie Rock is a spectacular area featuring magnificent Aboriginal Artsites along with walking tracks, billabongs and lookout areas. Nourlangie has a lot of hiking trails making it very enjoyable to explore! There are three main sites at Burrunggui: a rock shelter (Anbangbang shelter); several rock art sites, including the Lightning Man rock art site (Anbangbang gallery); and Gun-warddehwardde lookout.

At the very heart of Kakadu lies Yellow Water. Yellow Water is part of the South Alligator River floodplain. During early dry season, a boardwalk provides good views of Yellow Water's wildlife. When waters recede, a 1km return walk takes you across the floodplains to a viewing platform on Home Billabong.

Jim Jim Falls Plunge Pool

  • A 2km return walk through monsoon forest and over boulders will take you to a deep plunge pool surrounded by spectacular, 150-metre high cliffs.
  • This walk is suitable for people who are fit and can manage uneven terrain (large boulders, often slippery).
  • Allow 1 to 2 hours for this walk.
  • Visitors who choose to swim at the Jim Jim Falls plunge pool do so at their own risk, make sure your travel insurance is in order.


On the southwest portion of Kakadu, Mary River is the largest area in the park. The Mary River Crossing on the Arnhem Highway 3 km west of the Bark Hut Inn has picnic areas, toilets and a boat ramp to make this an ideal site to access the Mary River system. Camping is not permitted at the Mary River Crossing.

Rockhole is another popular access point to the waterways of the Mary River. A boat ramp and picnic facilities are located here, where Barramundi fishing is popular.

Couzen's Lookout camping area offers secluded camping beside the Mary River. It is only a short walk to the lookout where the sunsets are stunning.

Brian Creek Monsoon Forest is a patch of diverse monsoon forest that contrasts strongly with the surorunding woodlands. This is easily accessible.
