Don't assume that everywhere you travel you will find plenty of people who speak your language or the English language . Consider learning the local language and be nicely surprised at how far it will get you. Locals who can see you are trying hard to communicate will often go out of their way to help you. Greetings, numbers and directions are the easiest to learn so why wouldn't you?

Give some serious thought to learning a new language before you plan your next overseas trip. To get an idea of what is involved why not visit your local library or search the internet for free introductory language courses, these options can be inexpensive or even free and are a great way to get started.

A relatively new and increasingly popular learning technique is learning with your ipod.Your language of choice is simply downloaded onto your ipod so you can learn any place any time.

Begin with greetings and phrases such as How are You? my name is, can you help me? and some common destination phrases, such as post office and pharmacy, caf or restaurant, train station and taxi.

Consider what type of activities that you may include on your trip , what could you possibly need to ask for. Start learning theses terms and phrases. Learning a new language is just the same as learning any new skill, practice, practice, practice.

Keen on learning as much as you can about a culture and its language? well you may want to consider a language holiday. To truly be a part of the culture and its language you stay in local community and are immersed in the language, there are many companies that now offer this type of language training and the longer you stay the better your grasp of the local lingo becomes.

Wherever you travel it will be a benefit to learn at least some of the local language. It can really make a big difference to how you interact and how the locals interact with you.

Once you have a grasp of the local language you will be surprised at where and when it may become useful.
